Active Noise Cancelling Earphones/Headphones

Active Noise Cancellation - ANC
Active noise cancellation (ANC) (also known as noise control, active noise reduction (ANR) or antinoise) is the method for reducing or eliminating unwanted noise. A noise-cancellation speaker is one example of an active noise cancellation device. The speaker produces a sound wave with the same amplitude but with inverted phase (also known as antiphase) to the original sound. The waves combine to form a new wave and, in a process called interference, effectively cancel each other out. Today's form of active noise cancellation is brought about with a computer. The computer analyzes the waveform of the background noise and then generates its own signal in a reversed waveform to cancel out the unwanted noise by interference. Active methods (those described above) differ from passive noise control methods. In the case of active methods, power is used to defeat the noise. In passive sound control soundproofing materials, baffles, insulation, acoustical tiles and the like are implemented.
